Self Care for Busy Higher Ed
Professionals Presentation Slide Deck
Do you find yourself
working and working and never taking time away from the job? Feel like
you're wearing your shoulder blades for ears? Then this session's for
you!
This session draws on over 10 years of experience in a Level III trauma
center, two additional years on board a 911 ambulance, and over 20 combined
years of crisis and incident management. While we may not be in the
same situations as emergency responders, taking time for ourselves is a
crucial skill, and one that our future selves will thank us for.
We'll be talking about self-care, why it's so important in today's age of
"on all the time" activities, how to fit it into your daily life,
and how to hack a few minutes out of your day to keep yourself from burning
out.

Every campus is facing students living in poverty and struggling
with how to support them. This session will describe the implementation of a
Single Stop office, where the goal is to connect students to resources to
address their needs relative to persisting in school and completing their
degrees. These services enable those individuals to complete their education,
obtain good jobs, and achieve financial self-sufficiency. In this session we
will do a live technology demo with audience participation, followed by a
Q&A.

How Are We Doing?:
Making Assessment Easier Presentation Slide Deck
Everyone is looking for ways to measure their
efforts, but the effort it takes to measure can be overwhelming! At Portland
State, we are using a quick and easy electronic survey to evaluate a few
basic cornerstones of our service philosophy. Additionally, while
transitioning to a new registration platform, we employed a simple student
survey to prioritize the need for modifications. Come to this session to hear
about what we've done and what we've learned from our latest assessment
projects. Please come ready to discuss your recent assessment successes!

Creative Piracy: How to Steal Useful
Ideas From The World of Design
Presentation Slide Deck
"Creativity" may not be the first
word that comes to mind when you think about your line of work, but we have
more opportunities than we realize to apply creative principles to what we
do. In this session we will use a creative problem-solving technique known as
"Design Thinking" to collectively solve a real-life problem
experienced in a Registrar's office. We'll also discuss some basic principles
of visual design and explore ways that simple changes to your visual
materials can have a powerful impact. By taking some time to creatively and
thoughtfully consider how we design our processes and our visual messaging,
we can make things look better, function better, and ultimately better serve
our campus.

Round table: Oregon HB 2998 Updates No Slide Deck Available
House Bill 2998 (2017) attempts to mitigate credit loss by
requiring community colleges and public universities to align pathways for
community college students in Oregon as they transfer to an in-state, public
university. HB 2998 directs the Higher Education Coordinating Commission
(HECC) and Oregon's community college and public universities to work
together to improve transfer pathways between Oregon's community colleges and
public universities. Specifically, the bill requires the creation of two
types of pathways:
1) One or more foundational curricula (now called Core Transfer Maps) that
contain at least 30 credits, all of which are transferable to any public
university and count toward degree requirements; and
2) unified statewide transfer agreements (now called Major Transfer Maps),
which are discipline-specific pathways of roughly 90 credits, all of which
are transferable to any public university and count toward a degree in the
specific discipline.
To date, the HECC, community colleges, and universities have made significant
progress toward fulfilling the mandates of HB2998. This session will provide
an update on implementation progress and it will outline the next steps in
this work.

My Gender is Pirate: Data Collection and
Identity No Slide Deck available
Good data collection often means limiting the
range and type of answers a respondent can provide. States around the
country, including Oregon, are increasingly providing their residents with
nonbinary gender options in official documentation, but there are challenges.
California lets residents change their birth certificates, for example, while
Oregon only allows residents to change their identification cards.
Furthermore, some individuals identify their genders beyond the
male/female/nonbinary categories. How do we address the rapidly changing
language around gender identity our student population is now using? Hear how
some of these conversations are leading to policy changes on campuses. This
session starts a conversation through two lenses - a university communications
professional exploring options for inclusive campus data protocol, and a
former student from the same campus when it first initiated a process to
provide a more inclusive environment.

Collaborations in Support of Student
Advising Presentation Slide Deck
Advising students at colleges and universities
is a responsibility shared across the campus and is supported by technology,
faculty, staff, and student mentors. In a faculty adviser model, ensuring the
necessary information is available to students and faculty is a challenge
often managed by registrar and student services staff. In this session we
will discuss successful collaboration efforts at Reed College, initiatives
underway, and lessons we have learned as we have navigated the transition to
an online advising documents system, seen increased student demand for
advisers in STEM fields, and addressed student concerns about the overall
advising experience.

Closing an Institution: The Registrar's
Role No Slide Deck Available
The higher education landscape is changing
rapidly and an increasing number of institutions are struggling to stay
financially viable. When the most unfortunate happens -- a decision to close
an institution -- the Registrar's Office plays a critical role in winding
down operations. Join two registrars who lived through this experience as
they discuss the logistics of closing an institution and the role that the
Registrar plays in supporting students, faculty, and staff during closure
proceedings.
We'll cover topics including planning for teach outs, conferring final
degrees, and the transferring of records to a new custodial institution,
among others. We'll also discuss what we wish we knew and had considered
